Sortavala is one of the oldest towns in Karelia. The city is located on the Northern shore of lake Ladoga. Not from a large wooden city, he turned to business, cultural and educational center of Ladoga Karelia, incorporating all architectural styles of the late NINETEENTH century and the first half of the twentieth century. The hotel was built by Finnish architect ELSI Borg in 1939. It is a characteristic building in the style of "functionalism", fashionable in the 30-ies of XX century, on the facades and in the interiors decor. Modest beauty of the building lies in the proportionality of volumes and in strict articulation of the façades with window openings. Called "Hospiz" it belonged to the Finnish Union of young Christian women. During the 2nd world war it was used as a temporary city Church and classrooms of the school. The building has retained its original layout and is a historical monument of the city.
